A hybrid EV model was added in August 1997, adopting the series hybrid design which used a 1.5-liter gasoline engine solely to supply electricity to the main electric motor, with substantially reduced CO 2 emissions and vibrations. In November 1995, a full-time 4-wheel-drive model was introduced, with a high-roofed long body, a 4.1-liter diesel engine (15B-F), and an ECT system for transmission. Furthermore, the vehicle incorporated extensive measures to reduce noise and vibrations, achieving the highest level of cabin quietness in its class. The engine was moved further forward to the front end, flattening the floor under the second-row seats and improving the view from the third row and further back. The vehicle enhanced ride comfort and drivability, while adding safety devices including the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and eliminating the use of asbestos to ensure environmental safety. The three available engines were all diesel-powered, including a 4.2-liter 170 hp turbocharged unit (1HD-T), a 4.2-liter 140 hp unit (1HZ), and a 3.4-liter 98 hp unit (3B). Its model lineup was basically the same as that of its predecessor's.
